THE MOUNTAIN TOPS ARE WRAPPED IN A BLANKET OF FOG; AND IF CONDITIONS OF REFLECTION, REFRACTION AND DISPERSION ALIGN, A VIBRANT RAINBOW PAINTS ACROSS THE SKY.
Awaking to the sound of waves rolling onto a beach is hypnotic and somewhat fascinating for a city dweller. Staying on Oahu’s Waikiki beach, the view has me on the terrace in the mornings, watching the waves roll to and fro, enamoured by the sunshine squeezing through palm tree leaflets.
Just a short drive outside bustling Waikiki, reveals the expansive Koolau Mountain Range, providing a dramatic backdrop for a scenic route up the Windward Coast. Along this stretch, the rocky cliffs of Lanai Lookout will coax you into pulling over to take an adventurous exploration of the coves and swirling formations.
Continuing along the coastline towards the North Shore, the mountaintops are wrapped in a blanket of fog; and if conditions of reflection, refraction and dispersion align, a vibrant rainbow paints across the sky.
The North Shore area is an enchanting mix of rocky bay beaches made up of cave-forming coral heads, and vast, smooth beaches with white sand and azure water. Quaint and colourful food truck stops along the winding roads to provide for a refreshing break of coconut water, Poke and shave ice.
Upon returning to Waikiki at dusk, the ocean waves continue to roll up and down the shoreline, producing the same soundscape to which I awoke that morning. The sky fades from vibrant rosy hues to obscurity in a matter of minutes, but the harmonious sound of the waves does not follow the setting sun. I listen to their composition throughout the evening. Like a lullaby, it lulls me towards slumber with the anticipation of waking to its glorious melody in the morning.
