Provence: Crillon-Le-Brave

During late summer, the scent of earthy lavender hovers in the warm air and the evening glow takes on a shade akin to rosé, an orange-pink hue that fades as the sun sets over the backdrop of rustic fields and mimosa.

A single paved road circles up the outer edges of an archetypal Provençal hill, lined with cedar trees, leading to its summit and the small village of Crillon-Le-Brave, which dates back to Roman times. Once prosperous and home to over 800 inhabitants, the village is now a quiet escape for out of town visitors, with just a café, church, school, and a hotel. The hotel grounds form the centrepiece of this hilltop domain, having subtly restored the old splendour of the place, with the majority of buildings being former family dwellings.

From the hotel terrace, Mont Ventoux – a celebrated stage on the Tour de France – can be spotted through the morning haze as it stands tall above the seemingly endless rows of vines. The ripened grapes from local harvests are used to make the light, crisp rosés that fill the wine glasses during meal times, enjoyed while taking in the classic undulating landscape of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.

In the neighbouring town of Bedoin, traditional boulangeries sit alongside specialist cycling shops, and weathered pastel-hued buildings create a maze of backalleys to explore. From here, looking back provides a perfect view of Crillon-Le-Brave, perched atop the vast vinicultural terrain.
